Sometimes you know where the journey is taking you, and sometimes you do not.

Today, I found myself in the latter situation.

When I got up this morning, I knew exactly what I was going to work on; I was going to perfect particulars of making the center of the more colorful of the two square motifs.

Except that I didn’t.

Instead, I got out my 5.5 mm hook and picked up where I left off after yesterday’s crochet meet-up.

Working with the same partial skein of Red Heart Super Saver, I made this rectangle (for a total of four):

and another large textured square:

Satisfied with the progress I had made reducing the size of the previously renegade partial skein, I once again attempted to make the multi-colored motif center.

After encountering some difficulties and misdirections (my notes from the previous successful working of this motif were, to say the least, incomplete), I ended up crocheting this:

and while my 2012 North Carolina State Fair project will, no doubt, have a place for this large textured square made from Red Heart Super Saver coral, it did not solve my immediate problem:

I had one square done, but needed 41 more.

What is a crocheteuse to do?

Try again, which I did, and while it took me awhile to sort out what to do for rounds three and four, eventually, I did sort it out (taking better notes, this time), and this is what I ended up with:

There is still a lot of work to be done for this project. Many textured squares to be crocheted (both large and small) as well as rectangles and triangles, and once those are made, so very many ends to be woven in.

Then, of course, there will be the hours/days spent agonizing over color placement. Momentary regrets and remorse, but I will move, and eventually, the project will be finished.

My day did not unfold as planned, but unfold it did, and now I can look forward to another day, the mysteries of which await.
