A couple of Kindle cozies

I had thought that my next project would come from the recesses of the yarn annex which was where, in preparation for having the carpets cleaned last September, most of the stuff in my crochet empire was moved.

Instead, I found myself crocheting a couple of much needed Kindle cozies.

While on one level, all birthdays are created equal, some birthdays are what we think of as milestones: first birthdays, 16th birthdays, 18th birthdays, 21st birthdays, and any birthday ending in zero most often starting with 30.

Such was the case at my house this past weekend, and as part of one of those “ends in zero” birthday celebrations, a Kindle Fire HDX was given to mark the occasion, and it needed a cozy to protect it from the elements.

I decided that a cozy that looked like a manila envelope would be fun, so I got out a 3.75 mm hook and some Red Heart Super Saver gold and got to work.

Here is the main panel of the cozy before the sides were joined:

While I had expected the joining to take all of 15 minutes with another 15 to crochet the flap and weave in ends, I found that I had been a bit off in determining how long the panel needed to be, and I had to make some adjustments and additions to get a good fit, but eventually, I did exactly that, and here is how it looked when it was done and in use:

Buoyed by my Kindle cozy success, and wanting to apply what I had learned from my mistakes, I took my mom’s Kindle and got to work making a cozy for it. I briefly toyed with the idea of yet another DOTS inspired project, but when my mom expressed a preference for the pink yarn I had with me, I decided that I would instead work on perfecting the Kindle cozy/envelope design.

Here is the completed panel:

I had hoped to finish the second Kindle cozy before night fall, but the temperature dropped, and I had to set aside my crochet to make sure that all of my outdoor chores (particularly walking the dog) got done before it got any colder.

But when the sun rises on tomorrow, I will be ready with my crochet hook to put this project to bed.
