A midsummer afternoon

I love summer, and today’s midsummer afternoon was no exception.

When I was a child the days of summer seemed long and languorous. Each twenty-four hour cycle stretched to its maximum length providing time to read books, ride bicycles, use a hula hoop, or play with trolls.

There were some inconveniences like sunburns and mosquito bites, but on balance, it was my favorite time of year.

As I have gotten older summer has continued to be my favorite season, but the days have gotten much shorter, shrinking like a wool sweater that has inadvertently been put in a washing machine. So it was with some surprise (not the pleasant sort) when I looked up from my crochet today and discovered the afternoon irretrievably gone and sunset fast approaching.

There was no time to waste. The sky was overcast, the sun was low on the horizon, and my usual spot for taking photos was in shadow, so I not only needed to take photos, I needed to scout out a new location to take them.

After trying several that didn’t work, I finally hit on one that did.

I got this detail:

which I think exemplifies the raucous nature of crocheting with yarn scraps, and I also got this view from the side of the same riot of texture, scrappy ends, and ripple stitching

A longer view of the surface texture

and then — because I wanted to document my overall progress with this project, I got overview of the scrap yarn ripple in all it’s glory:

There are now just four days until the start of state fair season, and while I don’t know exactly what I am going to do with the ninety-six hours that remain before I turn my attention to my state fair project, I expect that I will pack each hour with as much crochet adventure as I possibly can, and take some time to tie up a few loose ends.
