How to crochet a chair leg sock

If you, like me, have chairs on hard surface floors (in my case tile), you might find that the act of moving a chair across the floor to do basic housecleaning creates a dreadful noise that can only be remedied by awkwardly lifting the chair, moving it, and then setting it down, only to be faced with the same three awkward steps once the sweeping/mopping/vacuuming is done.

To make your own chair socks you will need:

Materials:
3.5mm hook
Worsted weight yarn (I prefer acrylic for chair leg socks)
Yarn needle (a large, Clover bent-tipped needle is what I use)

As a result of my experience with how chair leg socks wear over time, I have modified the design and now crochet an additional pad for the bottom of the chair sock. Also, when weaving in the final end, be careful not to pull the end too tight as it can end up being difficult to pull the chair leg sock over the chair leg in need of one.

Now, how to make a chair leg sock that looks something like this:

A cylindrical chair leg sock

A cylindrical chair leg sock

to fit a chair leg that has a circumference of approximately 3.75″.

Using a worsted weight yarn of your choosing make this small circle:

Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form ring.

Round 1: work 6 sc into ring; join with slip st to first sc. (6sc) Fasten off

Weave in the ends and tie off on the back of the circle using a square knot. Trim the ends.

Begin the chair leg sock proper in the same manner. The chair leg sock is worked in continuous (rather than joined) rounds.

Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form ring.

Round 1: work 6 sc into ring. (6sc) [At this point you need to weave in the ends of the new chair leg sock as you will not be able to get to it easily once you begin the process of attaching the disk)

Round 2: (you will simultaneously work the second round AND join the chair leg sock to the disk just made) Insert the hook through both loops of the first single crochet stitch of the chair leg sock you are working on, then (with the wrong sides together) insert the hook through both loops of the 6sc disk, yarn over, and pull through all four of loops you inserted the hook through, yarn over and finish the first single crochet. Using the same technique, work a second single crochet in the same stitch. Work 2sc in each of the five remaining stitches of the first round (12sc).

Rounds 3–9: Work 1 sc in each stitch around (12 sc)

Round 10: *sc in each of next two stitches, sc dec over next two stitches, repeat from * twice (9 sc) Fasten off and weave in ends.

You may have to wrestle a bit to get the chair leg socks on, and an orange stick can be an inv
