A finally finished (unfelted) fat bag

This project is an outgrowth of another (as yet unfinished) project; a project, that, when completed, will be the felted first cousin to this finally finished unfelted bag.

I started the bag that began it all with two goals in mind: to use yarn that I already had to make a fulled/felted project I could enter in the 2012 North Carolina State Fair in Department X’s Crocheted Felted/Fulled Item category.

I failed on both counts as I needed to buy more yarn to complete the project and did not finish in time for the state fair entry deadline.

But on the journey to finishing the felted bag, I took a crochet detour which lead me here:

Using my beloved Red Heart Super Saver (my favorite worsted weight acrylic yarn) and a 3.5 mm hook, I made the above bag and then added this snappy (to my mind), hyperbolic closure:

I’m sure I would love using this bag, but as soon as I have the pattern written and have taken all of the photos I intend to take, it will be going to my mom, so I will have to get busy and make the felted version of this project if I want a new bag to call my own.

Update: This design has been sold to Red Heart Yarns and is now available as a free pattern.

  1. Firstly, congratulation on your state fair blanket entry, it was stunning and I’m sure deserved its win.
Secondly, I wonder whether you might be thinking of putting your bag pattern on your blog or up for sale because it’s a simply fabulous bag and I would like to own one.

  2. I agree with HilltT. I would love to buy several of your patterns. Might be something for you to consider…Just think — another way to finance your stash!

  3. You said: I started the bag that began it all with two goals in mind: to use yarn that I already had to make a fulled/felted project I could enter in the 2012 North Carolina State Fair in Department X’s Crocheted Felted/Fulled Item category.

My question: In ADDITION to the GORGEOUS piece you ALSO entered??
You really need to talk to some professionals about your underachieving!!

What can I say? It is just DARLING!! Love the colours!! You did a fantastic job on it! Are we gonna get to see pics of your Ribbon wins from your State Fair 2012?

    1. Thank you for your enthusiasm and kind words. It’s people like you who keep me going when I find myself crocheting at two o’clock in the morning to get a project ready for the state fair.

I had hoped to enter the bag as well, but that did not work out. With the wonderful sunshine we have here, I will make sure to get a picture of the state fair piece with it’s blue ribbon.
